During the 1970s, female sports reporters fought their own battles for equality as they tried to win equal access to male athletes after games, even if it meant interviewing them in their locker rooms. Here, Lawrie Mifflin, the first female sports reporter for the New York Daily News, interviews New York Rangers rookie defenseman Mike McEwen. Mifflin, who would go on to cover ice hockey, professional soccer, and the Olympic Games for The New York Times, was also a pioneer athlete. As a student at Yale, she had helped to form the womens field hockey club and served as captain when it became the schools first womens varsity team in 1972.
